Certified Legal Manager

The Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) is the credentialing body of the Certified Legal Manager (CLM)SM Program. The mission of ALA is to improve the quality of management in legal services organizations; to promote and enhance the competence and professionalism of legal administrators and all members of the Management team; and to represent legal management and managers to the legal community and to the community at large.

Purpose of Certification

The CLMSM Program allows a qualified legal administrator to demonstrate, through the examination process, a mastery of core areas of the body of knowledge identified as essential to the effective performance of a principal legal administrator.  Legal administration professionals must deal effectively with financial management and accounting, human resources management and development, office services management, information systems management and trends in the legal industry.

Why Certification?
In the field of Legal Administration, with each passing day, areas of knowledge become more specialized and expertise in these areas becomes critical.  Employers and employees want a clearer demonstration of knowledge. ALA’s voluntary Certified Legal Manager (CLM)SM program was developed in order to provide legal administrators with an opportunity to demonstrate a command of the core areas of knowledge identified as essential to the effective performance of a principal administrator. Certified Legal Managers are recognized as administrators who have met the work experience requirement, displayed a commitment to continuing education and the professional code of ethics, and passed a comprehensive examination.

By obtaining the CLMSM designation, you will:

  • Distinguish yourself among your peers;
  • Be identified as a consummate professional;
  • Help ensure a positive reputation as a qualified legal administrator;
  • Demonstrate proficiency in today’s most sought after skills.

The Exam Schedule

The CLMSM exam is given each spring in conjunction with ALA’s Annual Educational Conference and Exposition and at multiple U.S. locations on a single date in the fall. Consideration is given to scheduling the fall exams in locations where Regional conferences are held, where study groups are meeting and where individuals have indicated an interest in taking the exam.
